"The Servants & The Sheik"

A few years ago a friend sent us an article about Rudolph Valentino published in Cine Mundial, a Spanish language movie magazine. Thus began Renato's translation and our publication of Baltazar Cue's, The True Rudolph Valentino. Renato wanted very much to share this book with the public and I still find the account so historically rich, I marvel at all the content.

I am sharing two pages from The True Rudolph Valentino p. 124-125, because they are exceptional imo. The action picks up when Alberto and family are visiting Falcon Lair the beginning of 1926...

  1. This is such a wonderful and endearing scenario. I wonder how many pairs of eyes were rolling behind Valentino's back during his earnest spiel.

    1. This is corroborated by George Ullman when he wrote about the problems Valentino was having with his staff during Alberto and Ada's visit.

    2. Jeanine Villalobos, Jean Valentino's granddaughter, relied heavily on Cue in her dissertation. I've often wondered why the few members of the greater "Valentino Studies Community" do not address Ms. Villalobos personally when they criticize Cue and his series of articles that Renato Floris translated and put into book form.

    3. Exactly. Cue spent a great deal of time in Falcon Lair during those very critical last months of Valentino's life and the documents he was given are also important pieces of history. The letter from Natacha for example. If something does not fit that shabby VSC "doctrine" it is banished from their Facebook kingdoms and the tired, old myths and false narrative are maintained. The problem with that is that so many people, the majority of people.. can certainly think for themselves and reject that kind of control.

    4. I believe Cue attended the Murray-Mdvani marriage while staying at Falcon Lair. He is clearly in some of the photographs, along with Rudy and Negri. But...shhhhhhhh...don't tell the VSC. It might ruin their agenda.

    5. And no one at the time, came out to question Cue's account, etc. Reachi, Alberto, Florey... they were all still alive, even Negri and none of them issued a peep of protest to this publication. The doubt about it only came with Terhune and Bret and when it was available in English, as translated by my husband Renato and myself. I think it is a real gift that Renato has made the effort to make these publications available to an English speaking audience.

    6. I guess it also proves none of them read Villalobos' dissertation, despite their "great" friendship with the Valentino family.

    7. Indeed your husband Renato has a talent for translating languages. He did a wonderful job with both books translating them into English.

    8. It does prove they have never read the dissertation. She clearly attributes the Cue work.

    9. We have also been transparent about sharing our sources so anyone can check them. I think the suspicion of these works is motivated by the desperation of those who have lied for decades and now face the problem of what to say to save face. Cue was a guest in Falcon Lair, Valentino did give him documents to use and Cue wrote an honest and eye-witness account which was approved of by those involved. And Renato sincerely wanted to make Cue's work available in English and worked hard to make that happen. Tracy Terhune has absolutely trashed the work which speaks volumes about his complete lack of genuine interest in Valentino. Almost everyone interested in Valentino finds the book fascinating and sincere.

  2. I second the question posed at 5:07 PM above. Do the members of the “Valentino Studies Community” seriously believe their ability to assess the merits of academic materials is superior to that of highly educated Valentino family spokesperson Ms. Villlalobos? Or that the University of California, in awarding Ms. Villalobos a PhD based upon her Cue reliant dissertation, knows less about sound research and sources than they do? They must be joking. Or what of the sanctified Alberto having written a letter endorsing Cue’s work as official? Terhune has had the outrageous nerve to state that Alberto did not understand what he was writing or signing. Why hasn’t Villalobos and the family denounced Terhune for having so grossly insulted their patriarch?

    1. Copies of Ms. Villalobos' dissertation are so scarce, the VSC is confident that no one will ever read it. Therefore, this collection of abhorrent characters feels safe in disparaging the Floris Cue translation. Like children in the sandbox, they keep banging their shovels on each other's noggins. Terhune, in particular, is getting a real nick out of it.

    2. Excellent point 9:30.

  3. Did they not blast Jeannine Villalobos for saying that Rudy contacted syphilis from a prostitute when he was fifteen years old. Even Rudy even said that himself?

  4. It is Villalobos who has the PhD.Why would she say such a thing if it was not true.

    1. Unlike Villalobos, there are some who claim the title of "doctor," but spend most of their time just "roman" around creeps like Bret.

    2. What needs to be emphasized here is that the individuals who lambasted Villalobos and her Phd dissertation do not have a healthy psychology. Such individuals (a number of whom are still out there, sucking the oxygen out of any forum that will have them) actually accused Villalobos of fabricating her sources and/or airing Valentino’s dirty linen in the name of making a fast buck. Disgusting.

    3. Well if it does not fit their narrative, it goes. Or so they think!!
