The Lovely Lady Finds The Ring

This little moment in Valentino history (see below) involves some interesting people. Bev Barnett was a long-time and well known press agent representing John Wayne, Jack Benny, Gene Autry, Dick Powell, Johnny Cash, and Johnny Weissmuller; among others. The man scarcely needed publicity at this point in his career.

Rochelle Hudson claims she found the ring near Falcon Lair and I think her credibility was solid at the time too. More about this lovely young lady here:

The unfortunate character in this little saga was robber Gordon Phillips who was shot and killed in the burglary. From The Times Herald, Port Huron, Michigan, November 24, 1940, a bit of Valentino trivia.

  1. Are there any photos of the ring?

  2. Fascinating story! Was this a ring from Rambova? As far as Rochelle Hudson is concerned, I adore her. She was so lovely and delicate. She should have been a huge star. I recommend a rather obscure film called Wild Boys of the Road, a very stark and gritty look at teenagers during the darkest days of the Great Depression. Hudson is fabulous in this film.

    1. Makes one wonder. Did Rudy lose the ring and frantically look for it?

  3. And what happened to the ring?

    1. I guess that would be a question for the family of Bev Barnett. Surprising that between June and November that ring did not disappear from the police property room.

  4. I think why it was there would depend on where Rochelle Hudson found the ring. Was it on Falcon Lair property? Was it on the road to Falcon Lair? Maybe someone purchased it at the auction and dropped it on the way home. Maybe Valentino lost it out riding horses. Maybe, during the fury of an argument with Rambova, he yanked it off his finger and flung it out the window. Maybe some of the help took it. (guess who?) The possibilities are endless.

    1. Many possible scenarios. There must be more about it. Bev Barnett was very successful and maybe his estate still had it in an inventory.
