Yes. Some of My Rudy Art.

For a few years I kept up with two Instagram accounts, Affairs Valentino and Beyond Valentino. One being Rudolph and the other Natacha. I began those accounts before the flood of cool time-saving apps appeared. I spent at least an hour or two every morning creating the day's offerings.

I took a break to work on the book we are about to put out. I could not spend the time on Instagram. But I posted hundreds of Rudy and Natacha creations which I think I can still share. I would not watermark them but if I don't, if I miss even one, Eleanor Gribbin will swoop in and nab it. That is the reality of the watermark.

It would be great to not have to watermark things and great to have people sharing. But they take credit for my work and boldly so. That is the reality.

I used to think I had the best motifs in the world to work with as far as beauty goes. Who could dispute that? The accounts are still online and I will be back posting there as soon as the new book is out.

A Nod

A happy International Women's Day... with a nod to this great lady. So many photos were taken of her and Rudy that day but this is my favorite. She seems to be accommodating it all and looking forward to being away from the public eye. There is something resolved in her expression. A photograph taken by her love, Rudy.

I give my same speech every year on this day. Why a "day"? Are all the rest of the days of the year, assumed then to be "men's days"? I will not apologize for my feminist "tendencies".  But a day of recognition is better than none. We'll take it. I did the color treatment on this image. I know purists think it should not be done but I think it brings life to the moment.

A Surprising Interview

There were a couple of things that happened while I was finishing Beyond Valentino after Michael Morris' passing. I so wished he were there to know two discoveries which he so wanted to know. He began the research into both quests which were resolved after he was gone.

One being the confirmation that Natacha and Svetoslav Roerich were engaged. When I contacted the Roerich Foundation to follow up on the images Michael hoped to use, they put me in touch with a gentleman in Moscow who is writing a book on Svetoslav. Dr. Rosov was very formal and said he could not share a lot because he did not want to compromise his research. But he did tell me Natacha and Svetie were engaged for three years. He also told me he once interviewed Michael.

I knew nothing about that and asked him if he could send me the article. He said he published it in Russian and then sent me the file in Russian. We had it officially translated by a certified translator and included it in Beyond Valentino. I think it is one of the most interesting inclusions in the book.

The other revelation that surfaced after Michael's passing was the reason Svetoslav broke up with Natacha. Michael surmised father Nicholas Roerich summoned his son to India. But again through the Roerich connection, I was put in touch with a man in Spain who wrote an article on Natacha and “Svetie”.

He sent me excerpts from the diary of mother Helena Roerich which just recently became public to Roerich members. In those clips, she said she demanded her son Svetie leave Natacha Rambova because she believed she was the “reincarnation of Bathsheba” and bad for his karma. When I read that I was so sorry Michael could not be there because he would have flipped out to know that.

Here is the first page of Dr. Rosov's interview conducted in April of 1999.

"Michael Morris:

I Was Fascinated by My Rambova

Dr. Vladimir Rosov Interviews Father Morris, The Author of “Madam Valentino, The Many Lives of Natacha Rambova”

Dr. Rosov asks, “What prompted a Catholic priest to write a book about the dancer Natacha Rambova?”

Michael Morris:

It's a long interesting story, but I'll try to tell it briefly. I received a doctorate in art history from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to my work on my doctoral dissertation, I completed my master's thesis, with the focus and theme of this thesis being Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations for the play “Salomè”.

In the course of my studies, I discovered that a film was produced based on this play in which Beardsley's drawings were utilized in the design of the costumes and sets. These designs were the creation of a woman who was the wife of Rudolph Valentino. I was most interested in this production, because Salomè was the instrument that led to the death of John the Baptist. I had also been interested in the cinema for a long time, ever since my under-graduate studies at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. My particular interest in cinema was based upon two elements; religion and art. Therefore, soon after I discovered the Beardsley connection in this production, I was off to see the silent film, “Salomè” in a presentation in San Francisco.

As I watched the film, I was amazed by how the scenery and costumes still held such fascination for me, despite the fact that the production was out-of-date being made in the 1920's with Alla Nazimova. I then realized I needed to learn much more about this woman, Natacha Rambova who was the artist creating such wonderful sets and costumes.

Initially, I read only negative commentary about her. Soon my interest in Rambova turned into a sort of hobby and then an obsession. By the time I was working on my doctoral thesis which was devoted to Victorian paintings of monastic motifs, I kept my focus on Rambova and it helped me to keep my peace of mind. In New York City, I was able to find a copy of Natacha Rambova's will which identified several of her heirs. With the list as reference, I began to knock on doors, to call and write many letters. Many people found the time to share information about Rambova with me.

The more I learned about this woman, the more she sparked my imagination and the more I was drawn to her. At some point in my research, I decided that I should turn my interest in her into writing a book about her. This is how the book was born. It was odd as people treated me as if I was a writer, although this was my first book. I always believed my first book would be some thesis on monks in Victorian art, but few people seemed interested in such a publication. There was interest in a book about Natacha Rambova!”

Poor Rudy to Bravo Rudy

In 2003, Michael Morris introduced me to Valentino collector Bill Self and I interviewed Bill over the course of that year. I have written about those interviews many times, but this afternoon have been thinking about something Bill used to say, “Poor Rudy”.

He said that all the people he knew, who were a part of Valentino's circle of friends lamented he was so misrepresented in so many ways. Whenever we would hit upon some aspect of Valentino's history that was then being contorted, he would say, “Poor Rudy”.

Throughout the years I have been called homophobic for saying Valentino was made out to be homosexual by fiction writers exploiting a marketable theme. I have always felt it was a cheap and dishonest tactic to call someone homophobic when they were correcting a false premise. It is not that anyone is homophobic in saying an error was made. It is a correction in the history based on documentation and the testimony of those who knew the man.

Saying “Poor Rudy” is not lamenting homosexuality but lamenting an attempt to exploit Valentino for personal gain and changing his history to satisfy fiction writers' fantasies. I have thought, “Poor Rudy” many times on other false claims... such as when he is portrayed as a hapless victim of people who loved and cared for him, when his wife Natacha is portrayed as someone she certainly was not, when it is claimed the marriage was loveless, platonic and arranged, when it is implied, “bisexuality is always an option.”

I say “Poor Rudy” when people who claim to represent him today, bully and harass and conspire to silence anyone saying “Poor Rudy”. When they bully and cruelly harass anyone changing the tired old and false narratives. I think, “Poor Rudy” when his manager is portrayed as a villain, his grasping brother as a hero, a handyman in his home as some larger than life influence, when he is portrayed as an insatiable closeted homosexual, when innuendo is sourced as fact, etc.

Bill Self knew Jean Acker, George Ullman, Robert Florey, Alberto and Jean Valentino and said they all lamented saying, “Poor Rudy”. I am proud that despite the continuing harassment we face every single day, we are making a nick in cleaning up that mountain of dross heaped on Valentino's memory. I add that the brilliant insight and awareness expressed in comments posted here is something I am sure would be applauded by all of those who lamented, “Poor Rudy”. Thank you all for sending in your thoughts, righteous analysis and support.

We work to change the narrative from “Poor Rudy” to “True Rudy”! "Bravo Rudy!"

Word

I receive about 15 to 20 hate comments sent to this blog every day from the Valentino "Mainstream", "Legit", Studies Community (as they like to be called now I guess). I read a few words, recognize their hate and then delete. It is not so hard to ignore such dribble, such idiotic trollage and I move on. I post this particular one because it inspired a post. Here it is folks, "Winner of the Stupidest Valentino Studies Community Comment of the Week".

I think this person's soul is truly laid bare there. What a sad sack.  Why would they waste a moment of their life trolling a blog they hate? Is their life so worthless they have to waste it with such stupidity?

In previous posts I have shown how Tracy Ryan Terhune inspires this stupid behavior in his minions, that signature, yet influential mockery and cruelty.

When I asked Renato if I should comment on this, he said yes... “We must be present and with pride.”

He is the linguist who blesses Valentino with his hard work and vision. He takes on projects that would be an unthinkable amount of work for a normal person. And he grinds it out day after day with passion. He never hurries and researches words and phrases to meticulously ensure true meanings.

We talk about words and their meanings a lot. Yesterday he explained to me why the word calisthenics was such a beautiful word. Its Greek origin means, “beautiful strength”. Renato speaks and is fascinated by many languages and is a Latin scholar. He is known as a Latin consultant and is extremely serious about his Latin work.

Besides his native tongue of Italian, he speaks English, French and Spanish fluently. He can get by in German and seems to know enough for some conversation in Russian, Arabic and Farsi. What he brings linguistically to the Valentino legacy is remarkable; the work of Jeanne De Recqueville, Baltasar Cue and he translated Affairs Valentino into Italian. He is currently working on two more translations. I find it fabulous that he is making all these publications available to far broader audiences.

Of course English is not his first language. So when he completes a manuscript in English he passes it to me as he calls it, “to take my English and turn it into English”. With Cue's book, Renato worked with a scholar in Argentina and a professor in Chile who he consulted regarding Baltasar Cue's phrases. We acknowledge them both in the book. The result was a beautiful and accurate translation of which we are all extremely proud.

Renato has also contributed the Robert Florey translations and almost countless articles from the French and Italian archives which were untouched by Valentino research until he came along.

I could go on. But I wanted to point out that the above comment for me represented a precise distillation of the demeaning, mocking and ungrateful propaganda being spread by Tracy Terhune and Donna Hill. It is a shockingly bad state of Affairs Valentino when this kind of stupid bullying behavior is accepted by anyone. And shunning is bullying.

I will keep deleting the hate comments,  this evidence of the Valentino Studies Community's extremely stupid behavior. Because it is stupid and a waste of my time to even read a word of it.

How very much Renato Floris has given to Rudolph Valentino's legacy. And anyone in the Valentino world not recognizing and appreciating his work and beautifully executed, heavy-weight contributions, anyone mocking him... is very sick, very stupid and very propagandized.

Thank you Renato. Keep up the great work.

And Kudos to the winner of this week's Stupid Award.

Regarding The True Rudolph Valentino

On a blog which Tracy Terhune has run for more than a decade in tangent with British porn fiction writer David Bret, where their sole intent is to tell the world we are awful, criminal liars and should be hated.... there he hides his malicious intent under the guise of what he calls a“Literary Critique”.

But their viciousness shines through in every line and their grasp of anything “literary” is so weak a newborn baby would have more of a grip.

I guess if someone hits someone over the head repeatedly for ten years with a book, that could be considered a “critique”. But its not funny and not a legitimate critique demonstrating a hint of intelligence.

Terhune allies with David Bret in their trash banter and mocking on that blog and they do so after ever single book we have put out. It is one thing to criticize one book, one a few times, but to do so with every book and never stop for years on end, skulking as predators in wait for a new book from us...that is a pretty sick and sadistic obsession.

Terhune here (see images below) again calls us liars and claims we just made it all up. (Does that not seem rather revealing as far as what they do goes?)

Renato translated, The True Rudolph Valentino by Baltasar Cue and published it for the first time in English. Of course Terhune and Bret were frothing and came at it and Renato for his effort.

Terhune is pitifully wrong in his millionth attempt to make us look awful, smear our good names, spread his innuendo when he says we claim that Rudy and Cue were collaborating just to fit our "narrative". In trying to portray us as people we are not, he fails. But he is wildly successfully in making himself look ill-informed, petty and cruel. His spitting mad “review” of The True Rudolph Valentino opens with this:

He then follows with this stunning display of ignorance on the entire subject:

David Bret than adds the following to this "review":

I cite as source confirming the collaboration between Valentino and Baltasar Cue, the Doctoral Dissertation of Jeanine Villalobos. I add she says she relied heavily on the Cue book:

Excerpted from the dissertation of J. Villalobos, p. 18:

“Alberto said that Cue was a house guest at Falcon Lair in 1926 and that Rudy was cooperating on the series just before his death, giving Cue access to many personal documents and photographs (some of which are reproduced in the articles). In long California afternoons, Valentino, Manuel Reachi, and Douglas Gerrard (another close friend of the star) shared their reminiscences with Cue. After Valentino's death, Reachi, Gerrard, and Alberto Valentino continued to assist Cue. The articles that resulted from this collaboration are remarkable, offering stories and photographs that had never been published elsewhere. Subsequently, much of Cue's information has been substantiated, and my documents verify even more, which leads me to place a high degree of confidence in Cue's claims.”

Alberto's acknowledgment and support of the collaboration revealed in his letter included in the Cue book:

The Obvious Connections Made

I am and always have been blessed to have brilliant people in my life who encourage me and give me advise in this awful situation which we have been forced into since 2010... forced into because I wrote Affairs Valentino, because I revealed truths which our detractors long tried to deny. Because I discovered materials they tried to keep hidden away such as the 1975 Ullman memoir, those court records, etc. I thank those folks who tell me to stay strong, ignore the hate comments sent my way and fight on for our truth.

In regards to Donna Hill being affiliated with Bret and Terhune and their insidious bullying of us, I share the following. Evidence proves she is.  I do not judge how Donna Hill writes a book, or her books ... I judge her on her intellectual honesty. And in this I have every right to comment and defend myself.

Renato wrote her the following regarding an exhaustive listing of every single Valentino publication, throughout time, which she includes on her website. Donna Hill never gave him the courtesy of an answer, offered no explanation to him and still does not include any of our books on her list. Renato wrote the following as a private e-mail to Ms. Hill:

Donna Hill never replied, but instead passed Renato's letter on to Tracy Terhune and David Bret so they could use it as  material to further mock Renato and taunt him on that hit blog Terhune runs under my book's title.

To illustrate my point, I excerpt the following from a much longer, snide, vicious diatribe from Terhune which he titled, "You're Not on the List" accompanied by a cartoon saying "Crackpot!":

On that blog, Terhune provides a platform for David Bret's obscenities about us, which is in violation of a court order and also allows Cindy Martin to mock Renato. Contributing anything to that hit blog, i.e. Ms. Donna Hill, is complicity.  www.zumayawinslawsuit.com

Terhune's vicious name-calling my husband, "Child Star"and the regular postings about us by David Bret, speaks volumes as to Donna Hill, Tracy Terhune and David Bret's true intent in all of this. These people work together, have for many years and do so today with that blog online.

Pola Negri & George Ullman Had Something in Common

Although I included this story in Affairs Valentino, I am sharing the articles (see below) I used as source. It was incredible, yet not surprising, to me that this was never known about before.

In 1929, Pola Negri signed a note guaranteeing Alberto's loan from the Bank of America for $6800.00 (by today's exchange this would be $88,400.00 rate being x 13) Between 1929 and 1936, Alberto repaid a total of $581.74 ( x 13 = $7,562.62)

In 1936, the Bank of America obtained a judgment against both Alberto and his co-signer Pola Negri for the amount unpaid plus interest which was by then $9660.80 (x 13 = $125,590.40)

In renewing the judgement to collect the debt in 1941, the bank was told Pola was in Europe and a decision about her culpability would have to wait for her return.

I do not know what happened with this in the final call. But to me Alberto had a real knack for leaving people who tried to help him holding enormous debts for money he benefited from, i.e. George Ullman.

It is kind of sad Pola even agreed to co-sign a loan for him and as the article states she ended up owing, plus interest, the money she loaned to Alberto.

By 1941 the total plus interest grew to $13,042.10 (x13 = $169,547.30)

A Fascinating Glimpse

An Open Letter to Ms. Donna Hill As We Never Forget Administrator

Dear Ms. Hill,

I heard today that a followers' post of their copies of Madam Valentino and Beyond Valentino on your Facebook group was soon deleted. As the group's administrator I have to ask. Were you not a friend of Michael Morris at one point in time? I believed you were also my friend. We actually met, the three of us for a cordial get-together one day in Berkeley.

I told you all about the Ullman materials, so excited and in hind-sight so naive. You told me all about Jim Craig, someone I knew very little about until that day. So all things considered I find it hard to believe that you would not promote Michael's two books and enthusiastically so. Why don't you?

You know I have a hard drive of emails and material exchanged between Michael, myself and Renato as we worked on Beyond Valentino. You know this was his book and always will be. You know how Michael supported our work and you know I was asked by the Father Superior of Michael's Dominican order to have my name as c0-author. Yet you stand by silently while idiots claim we stole his identity after he died. We were instead given legal possession of his entire archive, encouragement to complete his book and we did so as a labor of love out of respect for Michael.

I do not need to post all of the working materials, any sane observer would know the history of the book and respect our integrity. You might be familiar with those who have zero integrity but we stand proud of all our work. You only permit the defamation of Beyond Valentino out of spite. You never told me not to share the information about the Rudy shirt being exchanged for those stolen records.

But I think in hind-sight you might have contacted Terhune to say hey... not right. Those records need to be returned to their rightful public housing and right now. But instead you began a covert campaign to kill the messenger.

And as you so proudly claimed how you were, “instrumental in having our books removed from sale.”

So now you have even the mention of Michael's work removed from your worthless Facebook group which is but an extension of you and Tracy Terhune's giant ego dysfunction imo.

Why would you not be so proud to have once been this great man, Michael Morris' friend?

Sincerely,

Evelyn
