I am not sure where this snippet came from I but found it here and thought it relevant to the previous Cobra discussion. Another little insight into the Valentino/Rambova collaborations. Its a tad fuzzy, but I think it is readable.
Yes, indeed, Natacha was an artist with a career of her own. I would say în many ways even superior to that of Rudy. She was a cultured, intelligent, talented and beautiful woman. It's a shame that she was largely known mostly as Rudy's wife when she hâd such an extraordinarly career and life herself.
It is always mystifying that some people claim she ruined Valentino's career when the exact opposite is what happened. She was the successful star in the motion picture industry before she met Rudy. And when she was brushed aside, he was at the top of his success, commanding an enormous paycheck and she was ruined. And I will say by the same kind of misogynistic innuendo which plagues her fine legacy today. In that regard not much has changed.
I believe that Rudy and Natasha were talented young people who would have benefited from other 's career. It is a shame that hers was ruined.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Natacha destroy her career by having an affair with her married cameraman ? She could have eventually gone back to set design again. But after behaving like that Valentino could not forgive her. It's not fair for her to lose her career but as Adela Rogers St Johns said in one of her books "she (Natacha) was never home."
I do not think her affair with the cameraman destroyed her career. And it seems incongruous that it would ruin her marriage after she tolerated Valentino's affairs. She lived and worked in a world of heavy chauvinism which we can scarcely imagine and is still victimized by it imo. After all the time I spent researching the dissolution of the Valentino marriage, I can say it was a complicated break up because they had a complicated marriage being also business partners. "Natacha never being home" is part of the demeaning innuendo regarding her marriage I think because at the time her work producing What Price Beauty was involved. Was she supposed to stay home more? Men who are so engaged professionally are not judged by how much time they spend around the house.
Natasha was a modern woman.
She really was so far ahead of her time. Unfortunately the rest of her world was still dark ages as far as women's rights were concerned.
What amazes me is Rambova, with her enormous talent for set design, should have been a highly sought after artist in Hollywood. Studios and producers should have been clamoring for her services on their upcoming projects. Her marriage to Valentino put the brakes on that. So don't tell me she didn't make any sacrifices being Mrs. Valentino.

I have never acted in an opportunistic fashion. I never would. This insult has really run its course and perhaps you could scurry back to your sniggering leader and tell him no one believes your bit o' defaming on that one anymore. Its absurdly false. I am so proud of Beyond Valentino and I never hesitated for one second when I was asked by his family to complete the book for him. I was honored and still am every day to have known this great man and called him my dear friend.

Actually, I dont think Natacha's Times were that shauvinistic and mysoginistic. I mean even then many women were achieving great things în all aspect of life and even în Hollywood there were real Power women : screenwriters, even a director I understand and, not to mention women like Mary Pickford, June Mathis and Alla Nazimova Who held real Power în Hollywood. I would say by comparison Hollywood today seems much more shauvinistic and male dominated.
Women back then could not have a career and children. And to not have children and want the career meant you became the object of all kinds of stereotyping name calling and innuendo. And there were very few women in power then, even the three you cited. I think there was a time in early silent film when women played more of a creative and executive role, but when the moguls took over that was done. Natacha was married to a traditional Italian in the 1920's who wanted her to stay home and have children. If you read about what women faced in those days it was tremendously misogynistic. So many women were trapped in marriages because they could not afford to divorce and the roles of women were clearly defined and from birth. Even what was going on during my childhood in the 50's is somewhat unthinkable today.
The reason women were powerful in the teens and 1920s in Hollywood was the fact they worked for less money than men. Hiring women was very cheap. Why not pay Francis Marion or June Mathis half of what a male screenwriter would make? Let Lois Weber direct a film and pay her 1/3 what DeMille received. Nazimova's power diminished significantly when her films failed to make money. Luckily for her, she invested in real estate. Pickford was a smart business woman. That made a difference. I guarantee she never made more than Fairbanks during their marriage. Once the studios got an iron fist grasp on the industry and started paying men a lot more, most women were relegated to departments doing "female" work: seamstresses, wardrobe mistresses, hairstylists, etc. By the 1930s, female directors, screenwriters, and producers were very few and far between. It took gutsy actresses like Bette Davis and Olivia de Haviland to fight the front office just for the right to make decisions about their own careers.
Nelly Shipman was an female producer, she was from Canada. She also starred in a Canadian silent movie "Back To God's Country".
Yes, I wrote about her in Affairs Valentino. The women who did find a voice and create are such heroines. But still so few.
